Introduction
Peach Valley School District has long focused on providing clarity, credibility, and results in every classroom. Our mission is to empower each student—academically, socially, and emotionally—while fostering a sense of trust, belonging, and future-ready pathways. In recent years, a promising trend in education has emerged: artificial intelligence. When used responsibly, AI technology can help teachers multiply their efforts, spark student curiosity, and extend our tradition of community-focused stewardship.
Our Ongoing Journey
Our district began exploring AI’s potential in 2015 through a STEM initiative at Peach Valley Middle School (PVMS). We aimed to align this cutting-edge technology with strong instructional design. By 2019, 50 teachers had been trained in AI-based tutoring software, allowing us to test new methods of practice and feedback in real-world classroom settings. Across our three schools—Peach Valley Elementary (PVES), Peach Valley Middle (PVMS), and Peach Valley High (PVHS)—we continue to refine how AI can strengthen everything from lesson planning to personalized intervention.
The Evidence: Intelligent Tutoring
One of the most credible applications of AI is called intelligent tutoring. Research shows that well-designed programs can boost learning by providing formative feedback, guiding practice, and adapting lessons. Here in Peach Valley, we’ve integrated these systems in select math and reading courses. While human teachers are central to student growth, intelligent tutoring systems give us additional clarity on student performance and enable more precise execution of support services.
Engaging Students with AI
Today’s AI can act like a trusted study partner—with the teacher still firmly in control. For instance, generative AI tools can draft prompts, offer writing suggestions, or provide step-by-step solutions where teachers see a need for extra help. At Peach Valley High School, we’ve tested hands-on AI-based “coaches” that help students revise essays and explore new ways to solve science problems. Yet, we make sure to teach students how to question AI responses, double-check facts, and build strong study habits.
Ensuring Equity and Safety
Stewardship of student privacy and well-being remains a top priority. Our district took steps in 2021 to develop a teacher pipeline and embed training on AI ethics to protect student data. We recently launched a Parent University in 2022 to promote transparency and help families understand the benefits and boundaries of AI-based tools. By limiting personal data collection, clarifying the intended learning goals, and monitoring usage, we align each AI initiative with student safety and ethical standards.
Real Examples from Peach Valley
• Project-Based Learning Initiative (launched in 2012): In certain units, teachers use AI to personalize feedback on group projects.
• Career Pathways at PVHS: AI-driven career exploration modules expose students to future job skills.
• Math Boosters at PVMS: Intelligent tutoring systems provide real-time insights on how students work through equations, reducing guesswork for teachers.
• Reading Mentors at PVES: AI-based reading apps give guided practice for fluency while gently correcting mistakes.
Each program focuses on advancing student success by giving teachers actionable data and students more dynamic engagement.
Looking Ahead
Next year, our goal is to refine these AI tools to ensure they remain aligned with the proven learning principles at the core of our district. We will keep investing in professional development for educators, encouraging them to use AI in a way that amplifies—rather than replaces—the vital human touch in learning.
